U.S. prison rates

Despite having only 5% of the world's population the United States boasts an impressive 25% of the world's prison population (Infographic: U.S. Incarceration Rates).

Seems when we are so actively engaging in conflicts around the globe our own national security is failing. When our nation's children are not provided with quality parenting, nutrition, education and vocational opportunities they too often become liabilities, rather than assets.

Sadly, prisons have also become a "growth industry", as they have been turned over to the private sector, and are now producing profits for their shareholders.

Making money in the prison industry

Unbelievable though it may sound, prisons are big business in the United States of America.  Just recently the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) announced a special dividend to shareholders of $675 million dollars. (CCA board of directors authorizes special dividend of $675 million).

Speaking of justice issues, despite the huge financial misdoings on Wall Street very few white collar criminals have been imprisoned.  As one commentator noted "Give a man a gun, he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, he can rob the world."
