Snowy Theodore Wirth Park

Theodore Wirth walking bridge
over Minnehaha Creek
After finding my pair of dusty snow shoes in the garage I headed over to Theodore Wirth Parkway.  The parkway and Minnehaha Creek, which flows through it were especially beautiful the the freshly fallen foot of snow.

It was an unexpected surprise to find another Capture Minnesota photographer out shooting photographs.

Capture Minnesota Photos

Over the past year I've enjoyed posting pictures on the Capture Minnesota website, along with hundreds of other photographers around the state. It has been fun to see the wide range of pictures taken from folks around Minnesota.

I was pleased to have a couple of pictures selected for the Capture Minnesota book that was produced this past spring.  With hundreds of photographs still coming every day they will be producing another book this coming winter.

Pictured below are some of the shots that I've uploaded to this site.  You can find more when you're on the Capture Minnesota site by searching under the name "Dano".

Fractal patterns in nature

Fractal patterns with ice and branch
Fractal pattern of ice cracks
Earlier I posted some pictures of ice cracks that seemed to mimic roots or branches.  I've since learned that these may be defined as fractal patterns.  In the book "The Fractal Geometry of Nature", B.B. Mandelbroth defines fractal patterns as a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size of the whole.  Snowflakes perhaps are one of the best examples of this.

Fractal pattern in tree
The tree, pictured right, appears to have a fractal pattern that imitates the veins of a leaf.

I learned of this term from a fellow photographer on the Capture Minnesota website.  These past few months it has been a blast to view pictures uploaded by photographers, both professionals and amateurs, from around the state.  This contest will be drawing to a close at the end of January.  Shortly thereafter a book will be published with a couple of hundred of the top photographs.  I wouldn't want to be the one having to rendering down the amazing variety of pictures portrayed on this site.

Minnesota in photos

Milkweed by the pond
Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) is gathering photos of scenes from around the state for the formulation of a Minnesota photo book.  I've both enjoyed submitting and viewing photos.  To see a wide range of pictures, or submit some of your own, visit the website, Capture Minnesota.

The photos that I've submitted can be found by using the search menu near the top of the page.  I'm listed under "Dano".
